Quick one
Whatever differences this man had with a given community specifically, or a religion as a whole, you still have to give it to him fully when it comes to the art of politics, oratory, persuassion of following (sometimes blindly) ideologies, etc.
Sample:
"It is claimed that Hindi should be common language because it is spoken by the majority. Why should we then claim the tiger as our national animal instead of the rat which is so much more numerous? Or the peacock as our national bird when the crow is ubiquitous?"
(copied and pasted from Wikipedia, spoken by Annadurai at the Indian Parliament during 1962).
The man passed away in 1969 while still serving as CM of Tamil Nadu and 1,500,000 turned up for his funeral procession.

One should ask our logician supremo if having a rat as a national animal or crow as the national bird has any significance to the common man other than symbolic ones. Of course the very nature of dravidian political debate or any other for that matter, is that it very rarely has anything to do with actual results(not that I care what the national language is).
For instance during the reservation debate I came across a genius who said he will oppose reservations if the upper castes will stop using caste as an eliminating factor in online matrimonial sites. Yup, brainy boy, change in online matrimonial ad scene will help solve the problem of the great divide between the haves and havenots and reform our education system- way to go!!!

Talking about symbolic, I just checked the STATE animal of texas - nine-banded armardillo..
The thing is, it was(is) possible to lead a bunch (a whole lot, actually) of people to believe in an ideology by "mere" speeches. Great big lies, indeed.
LOLed at the brainy boy's comment.

Visiting the blog world after ages, noticed that you've moved to Boston now. How is the fall there? I went to school there for 3 yrs and moved to Bay area after wedding, its so different right?

Whenever i am asked the question as to why tamils dont accept hindi as the national language,I give the same answer. That i have not got any reply after my answer goes without saying.Whatever his position on other issues,I am with CNA as far as the language issue is concerned.

It is indeed misleading to praise the greatness of a statesman by a qoute which does not play much into meaning, but is a mere jest. Afterall, it would have been concocted by his speech writer.

Mitr: Welcome back!
Boston is super nice. The fall colors are slowly starting to show and we haven't explored the region fully.

NGE & ABI: Whether this statement needs to be taken seriously or not, the very fact that people can be led/misled by mere speeches is truly amazing. And they were/are.

ABI,
CNA has said more on this topic than any one else.I agree to his language policy not based on a single statement.U mean to say that we should not praise nehru for is 'tryst with destiny' quote because it would have been concocted by his speech writer
TTG,
That is the essence of all political movements.Exaggeration, blaming a community as the source of all evils, imagining a past tailored to its idelogy (nazis, hindutvatis, dravidianists)are the sustenanace for these movements. The other political movements in india have fostered hatred and disunity.IMO,one exception could be the indian independence movement.May be thats because i think the man who led the indian independence movement made all the difference

Nice quote..it impressed me for a while. However when it comes to comparisons, there can be many made a lot of which is made out of context. I do believe the language of choice should not be enforced on an individual. I also believe politicians have the knack of making sensational speeches. True leaders follow it up with action.
