Brian Lara's 400

When Lara batted and batted for several sessions to get to his 400 against England, the aussies said that they would never do that and instead go for the victory. Of course, the match was drawn and it was all but obvious that he did it for the record.

Saw Dasavatharam yesterday.

  • Interesting comparison. I wish to add something about that match vs England..

WIndies in that match didnt behave much differently from NewZealand did, a few months ago against us. Both the teams managed to make the opposition follow on as well. Only that WIndies couldnt reproduce anything close to their first innings bowling efforts, even with almost 40 more overs than I innings. Mike Vaughan batted out of his skin to save that match and earn the draw. So, one cant accuse Lara for his 400. Also, considering the 'dead rubber' status of the match, his marathon innings can be justified.

    Ippo unga vazhikku varrenn:
He might have declared a few runs short, but I felt no harm in going for the record, especially since the end result was justified. What he lacked was good supporting cast, espicially, the bowlers. Also, the pitch was benign which meant that he had to do something quite remarkable to gain a psychological edge. One may argue that, being the captain, he might have a say in the nature of the pitch, but the pitch-in-charge, the great Andy Roberts, wanted to play it safe and prevent a whitewash.

And, Ponting's remark on Lara , to me, was mostly due to jealousy. (You know Ponting reasonably well by now, dont you?)

I enjoyed replying to this post... ;)

  • Well Dasavatharam did break many records but I personally felt that it was also an entertaining movie. I really liked Kamal acting those characters.

    Raju: :-)
indha padathukku, if kamal had given the dialog duty to someone else, it may have been more tauter. my "expert" opinion!

I am not sure if this is a general feeling, but after the advent of IPL (with all mix and match of foreign players), I kind of don't have so much bias against some of them anymore. Esp Hayden and Warne.

Vayitherichall Paan-ting still is there in a corner of my brain though!

Maverick: Better editing would have definitely made it more engrossing. Of course, the editor needs to pick and choose what to edit from what he is given.

  • I like the analogy! It makes sense at several levels. If Ponting had done it we would have accepted it as a part of his character;as with any other actor!

  • This is a very interesting comparison to Dasa.

However, please bear with this comment, I came to your blog from another comment on a site where you referred to Harris Jayaraj's Uyirin Uyire as being influenced from DJ Tiesto's album. Could you specify which song..... thanks.
