Left or Right?

lefty Posted by Picasa

I started playing football (soccer) with my colleagues at work. The first thing everyone (excluding me) noticed was that I kicked the ball with my left leg - I am right-handed. I hav'nt played football seriously till now, but even if it is a stone on the road, semi-consciously I kick it with my left leg. Not only that, I shuffle a pack of cards with my left hand doing the shuffling action. Even at the gym, I noticed my left leg and arm is slightly stronger than the right. And yet, I am right-handed.

My handwriting was pretty bad when I was in school - my tamil teacher used to say - "kozhi kirukkal" and "kye ezhuthu thala ezhuthu maari irukku". At that time, I retorted by saying, "it is not how I write, its what I write that matters".

Maybe I was meant to be left-handed, and someone or something caused me to change to right-handed. I hope it was not because of someone telling me it is wrong to use the left hand for writing. Whatever be the case, I feel I am missing something!.

  • Probably that's why computers started having keyboards (to avoid right left confusion) :-)

  • Stumbled on this post, but the subject is very much related to me. I've a stronger left hand but write with my right . Like you, I kick better with my left leg and also use my left to bowl in cricket; but I'm a right handed batsman. I do write pretty well with my left hand, but never practised do get it perfected. You've not mentioned which hand you use to throw, it is the best way to determine your dominant side. Actually you might be ambidextrous (ability to use both your hands).

  • Srini: LOL.. very true...

Prem: Welcome. Glad to know that I have company. Hmm.. I think i throw using whichever hand I feel easier at that time. Try this for freakiness: I found that I am able to write using both hands at the same time with the left hand doing a mirror image of writing done by the right. Go figure!!

  • Interesting and maybe.

We have this dirty habit...of making kids convert to Right hand..thanks to the misc. use of the left hands.!

But there is a positive side of that too...One of the books I read recently about Brain power suggested this as an exercise.

People have to use the other hand ( the one they dont' use) and do things. For example - If you button your shirt with Right, use left, if you write using left, using right.

So..who knows...Maybe you won't be a giant after all...had you continued with Right?

  • I guess ur ambidextrous!!or maybe like u say subconciously or conciously u started feeling that it is unnatural to be a leftie!!!

  • Narayanan: Exactly!!. I have seen some instances where parents/elders "correct" a child when he uses left hand for writing. Maybe thats why there are so few lefties in India. Ayya!.. summa dhaan giant nu peru vechunden. :-).

Siddharth: Someone asked the centipede - "how do you know if one of your legs doesnt walk?". the centipede who was walking fine till then could not take another step as it was confused. Naan andha maari aaiten.. :-)

  • Interesting, Deepak.. may be u are a leftie..

You know something.. one of the secrets of Sachin Tendulkar's superb eye-hand coordination, I read somewhere, is because he is a leftie.. so, when he faces a bowler, his prominent eye, i.e., left eye, does most of the ball-seeing and that helps!! Donno how he started batting and bowling right-handed.. but he writes left..

  • TT:
In India, most children are forced to grow up right handed, we are forced as children to eat with our right hand and do everything with our right hands, sometimes naturally left handed children are forced to learn with their right and because of that end up being ambidextrous, my brother is a living example. He writes with his right hand does everything with his right but uses his left hand when he plays badminton or cricket.

  • GP: Now, Sachin.. that guy is amazing. If someone has cricket in his mind, its got to be him. Poyum poyum enna poi sachin oda compare panreengaley?!

Robbie: Nice to know that I have company.. :-)

  • It is still a wonderment to me to watch left-handers write so casually(even though it is so common here)!! I often remind myself that I shouldn't try to change my daughter if she is left-handed. But most times, I automatically instruct her to use the right hand when uses the left!
