Aan = paavam

I happened to see (~10th time) one of my all-time favorite movies - Aanpaavam. This was Pandiarajan's directorial (and acting) debut.

I would probably say that this movie, along with Baghyaraj's "Andha 7 naatkal", "Indru poi naalai vaa" and Kamal's "MMKR" have the tautest screenplays I have ever seen in Tamil movies. The Maestro was at its peak (circa 1985) when this movie was released. AMAZING background music!. Also, this movie had several situation-type comedic scenes - "Muttudhaa? - Muttidichu" being one of them.

For several years(!), I had this nagging question - why did he name the film as "Aanpaavam". I think I found it out only the last time I saw the movie.

A small backgrounder of the characters:

1. Pandian and Pandiarajan are the sons of V.K.Ramasaamy.
2. VKR starts a theatre (touring talkies) in the village and becomes even more important by doing so.
3. P & P are useless fellows.
4. VKR arranges marriage for Pandian (the elder one).
5. Kolangudi Karupaayee is P& P's grandmother.

Scene:
******
Pandian to KK: paati.. ponnu karuppa sevappa nu kezhunga..

KK to VKR: yenda raamasami.. ponnu karuppu thola, sevappu thola?

VKR to everyone in general: puli tholu!...kazhuda, kattunaa katta vendiyadhu dhaane?

Pandian to VKR: yemppa?..ponnu yenakku pudikka venaama?

VKR: ponnukku unna pudichaa podhaadhu?

*****

Voila! and so true!!. Poor guy(s). It doesn't matter if the guy likes the girl or not. Adhanaala dhaan "aan paavam" nu title.

Cha!, life is not fair at all.

  • Wow! Enna kandupidippu!! But sometimes your title is true. Like cannot wear pink/purple, cannot cry in the movies even for sad scenes and if in Chennai, cannot even get a seat in the Pallavan bus!!!

  • as surya says, Kadhanayagan is another laugh-a-riot movie..

but not as good as Kadhanayagan, where dialogues are too good. i remember, as a kid i was all laughing seeing Janagaraj's son with a vessel on his head.

hard to see a quality comedy movies these days.

By Blogger Narayanan Venkitu, at August 06, 2005 8:59 AM

  • Narayanan: really!!. what was his name?. All these days I was thinking that he was the stunt-director of the movie - you know, due to the trend where stunt directors act in one scene of every movie?..

Wow.. an unintentional post bringing so much hidden information!.

    By Blogger tt_giant, at August 06, 2005 9:14 AM

  • it was an awesome movie. wish Pandiaraajan can come up with one more like that :)

By Blogger saranyan r, at August 06, 2005 7:47 PM

  • Saranyan: He was fresh out of Baghyraj's school at that time. So, we could see his guru's style faithfully reproduced.

  • hi, you all forgot to mention one of the extradinary scene in this movie, which might have propelled this movie even to oscar prize. that is, pandiyan went to seetha's house (pen parkum padalam). in that scene, every minute detail of our beautiful tamil culture is depicted in a most beautiful way with the wonderful music of ilayaraja. particularly, seetha raising his feet , to meet the height of pandiyan was a jewel in the crown of tamil cinema in particular, indian cinema in general.
