Gazelles and Lions

Gazelle & Lion Posted by Picasa

Currently, I am reading "The World is Flat" by Thomas L. Friedman. This is a non-fiction book where the author explains global economy, out-sourcing, off-shoring etc., in a very simple way so that even guys like me who have no knowledge in economics can understand.

In one of the chapters (Ten things which flattened the world), the author talks about offshoring. He mentions an old African saying/song in the text:

Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up.
It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be killed.
Every morning a lion wakes up.
It knows that it must outrun the slowest gazelle or it will starve to death.
It doesn't matter whether you are a lion or a gazelle.
When the sun comes up, you better start running.

This is so true!. Gone are the days where one can be content with the knowledge he/she has accumulated till that point. Right now, the world is in such a state that, if I think I am not meant to do some things as part of my job, there is another guy (better qualified than me, who knows?) who is willing to take it up. Whether global economy has flattened the playing field or not, it has become an ideal ego-buster.

Just wanted to share this with all of you this new week.

Update: It just so happened that I used a sketch of a gazelle and a real photo of a lion for this post. Now when I look at them, it is as if the lion is chasing an imaginary gazelle and the paper gazelle is running from a real lion!. But hopefully that should not dilute the fact!.

  • "The trouble with the rat race is that even if you win, you're still a rat."
    - Lily Tomlin
By the way i got the chance to read a part of that book and found the first chapter a bit too repetitive....

  • Siddharth: Yea. If you get a chance, read the book.

Slash: I agree. It is not a page turner - like scoring double hundered only in singles.

  • Yeah.. true.. No room for complacency.. No way u can get a 'laid-back' approach..

In India, everyone wants a government job b'cos one can relax forever.. without any necessary increment in knowledge.. the 'seniority' and other 'kakka pidithal' stuff would take care of their promotion..

With the ratio of public to private jobs declining rapidly, everyone needs to be smart and up-to-date to survive.. I think it is certainly good.. I wont mind disinvestment of even profitting PSU's like BHEL for that reason..

  • I agree with you GP. It is not going to be long to happen - what you mentioned. What we hope should not happen is a vicious circle where more competition leads to more capitalism. Those two should be disjoint always.

  • +its completely true, the worst part of the entire situation is that u cant stay away from the race. if u do, ull get killed!

  • Like my favorite author's book goes..The world is flat indeed.

Tom has written a lot about India in the recent columns in NY Times, I hope you saw his Video on outsourcing..He travelled to India to talk to people.

I think Tom likes India a lot.!

Great writer and true indeed about the Gazelle and the lion.!

I am thinking about getting the Audio CD. Unfortunately I don't see it yet in the Sam's Club's and Costco's.! ( Not the book...The CD).

  • Narayanan: Check out your county library.. they would have a CD copy. I went to the library for borrowing this book, only to know that there were 71 holds!. So, I bought the book. You can also check Barnes and Noble or Borders store.

I am only 1/3 into the book. Real nice one, I must say.

  • Nice post! Guess, it's been there all along. A century or so back, it was land or kingdom. Not vigilant enough or ambitious enough and expanding, there was always Kings and armies ready to pounce, isn't it?

I remember long time back, one of my father's North Indian friend said that the South Indians lacked ambition (and mostly content) and hence never come up big!!

By Blogger Me too, at August 03, 2005 7:09 PM

  • Me too: Yea, nature red in tooth, fang and claw..

South Indians lack ambition and thats why they dont come up big?? thats the most ridiculous statement i heard today. if that north indian meant coming up big (in physique and weight), yea.. maybe true.

  • The article was not only a good read but very insightful. I have a query though. How would you target a niche where there are not many blogs and those that are there are not kept up to date and have a low/very niche readership? Any tips would be gratefully received. http://animalimage.online/
