To get one or not to get one; that is the question!

Hair today! Posted by Picasa

A haircut, that is!.

If you are thinking - "what is there to think about?. It is so simple", hold on. It is not so simple if you are a certain me:

1. In the US, you need to tip the barber - say a couple of dollars. On an average, the base charge would be around $12.
2. The only suitable day I can get a hair cut is a saturday.
3. Any cash in my wallet would be spent in a snap - on lunch, groceries, etc., before Friday.
4. Same is the case with cash-back recieved from departmental stores. Poof!. they are gone.
5. The least denomination an ATM can spit out is $20.
6. I won't drive to the ATM just for the sake of getting cash out. There is a barber shop within walking distance from my place.
7. Even in the rare case of having a crisp $20 bill in my wallet, I cannot use it - since there would be some awkward moments when the barber attempts to retrieve the change and I would be forced to say "keep the change". And no, they don't accept credit cards.

So that is my dilemma. Already the talk of my office is my hair!. Some like it, while some ask - "are'nt you satisfied with your height?".

I almost made an attempt to go today, but sat down in front of my laptop to blog about this. Shame on you, computer!. You made me miss my haircut this week too!.

Oh well, maybe next saturday!.

  • The same with me too, though I will always have atleast 10 bucks in my wallet (family man, u see)..

So far, no one except my wife has raised any eyebrows.. I have been 'inspired' by Vikram and Madhavan and decided to grow it to pony-tailable.. (Only irritation is the hair around the ear, which would make me look like TR.. so i keep cutting around there once a month)..

  • Very hilarious tt. I too run into same problems when want to go for a hair cut. My first stop would be an ATM. Just for this reason nowadays I go there once in 4 months. You can imagine how I generally look. Better to be born as a girl at least for this reason :-)

  • One cool thing I understood from your posts is that you seem to have a keen sense of observation. Several things which seems normal to several people may worth writting out and you are doing that job exceptionally well. I can sspot out several of those posts ("Has this happened to you?" is one good example). Keep up the nice job buddy.

Srini: Thanks man!. its been a nice mutual inspiration - this act called blogging!.

Once in 4 months!!.. your barber must be using a step-ladder to start cutting and then get down one step at a time...

  • I wonder about this at times..( though I don't blame the computer). Mine is more grey than black..and I am happy I have hair. That said, the grey ones stick out ! like Peeping toms as the hair grows.

So, I endup having those 12 dollars + 3 dollar tip haircuts here in the Bay area.

I have never had one decent satisfying haircut from the time I landed here in the US.!

My barber..in India..the best.! These days when I go home I have a haircut in the first few days and then one more just the day I leave.!

  • Siddharth: When my parents visited me here, my dad (who stayed for 1.5 months) did not want to cut his hair here. He said nothing beats his Indian saloon!.

    --..--..

Adengappa: self cut!. I tried once.. failed miserably.. how did your friends manage to do it?

    By Blogger tt_giant, at August 14, 2005 7:34 AM

  • Hi..got here from siddharth's blog.funnily enough,India is the cheapest place for so many things, and yet,all of us want to run away from here for 'better' lives.more 'expensive' lives perhaps.in england, you need an appointment with the barber first before you lose not only ur hair but ur life savings as well

By Blogger Kanishkaa, at August 14, 2005 12:17 PM

  • LOL...

If you don't have the long hair, as rules ramanujam, then I believe you can manage.....

By Blogger Ram C, at August 14, 2005 8:43 PM

  • who said girls are lucky.. I know a lot of them who go for a hair trim every month.. all the more some of my friends spend like crazy for highlight, coloring or sometimes for straightening like the shampoo ads ;).. I feel it is way too expensive.. cos they charge close to $70 to $ 80 for these stuff..

adhanaala inga sagala vidhamanavarkalukkum therivipadhu.. : pasangala... colored hair paarthutu.. ok sonna.. later in life..ur wallet will b crying :)and u will be visiting salon for ur haircut once or twice a yr for 2 reasons : 1. cos u cant afford with ur wife spending too much on hers ( will they do get 1 haircut free for 1 color/highlight ...lol)
    2. U might be bald worrying abt giving ur wife such a big hair styling allowance..

ladies.. no offense pls.. just my opinion ..lol
